💵 Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard Still Competing on Price, Features |
Clark’s three favorite “children” for investing can’t remain the best forever, right? |
With many billions, even trillions, of dollars of assets under management at stake at each of the largest investment companies, powerful market incentives exist to undercut, innovate or out-compete Fidelity, Schwab and Vanguard for market share. |
Robinhood is perhaps the biggest challenger at the moment. It has endured its share of controversies but nearly became a member of the S&P 500 recently after another period of rapid growth. |
However, don’t think the once-upstart Big Three, now legacies, are resting on their laurels. Somehow they continue to find ways to slash fees and offer more features. |
Schwab, our favorite company for ETFs, just slashed prices on four funds that reportedly will undercut Vanguard’s equivalent fund prices by 25%, which is extremely hard to do. The moves will cost Schwab almost $20 million in annual revenue. |
But Schwab finally has absorbed and integrated TD Ameritrade, a historic acquisition. According to RIABiz, “Schwab’s incentive to reduce ETF fees to appease [Registered Investment Advisors] may be higher in the aftermath of acquiring 7,000 advisors through its TDA acquisition. Mergers create dislocation of clients.” |
