I am done recording the Week 12 Beyond the Box Score podcast -- a weekly Monday recap show that I do with Adam and Dan -- and now it's time to catch FFT Newsletter readers up on everything that I've learned in the past 24 hours! We're going beyond the box score! |
If you want to check out the podcast version on FFT, you can listen to that here! |
Beyond the Box Score -- Fantasy football risers following Week 12 |
Fantasy riser -- Bucky Irving |
He is just so good. That's the fullest extent of my Bucky Irving analysis at this point. |
Finally, in Tampa's first game out of the bye, Irving appeared to have begun his takeover as the backfield's lead. |
And, no surprise, with more route running opportunities, we saw Irving turn in the most Week 12 receiving yards of any RB. Irving sure looks like a Fantasy football league-winner. The Bucs are favored in all but one remaining game, so we may just see a ton of the rookie RB to close out the season. Maybe not, maybe the Bucs will try to establish Sean Tucker as the goal line back or go back to Rachaad White as the primary RB. This link will take you to me getting a bit too impassioned at the idea that could happen. |
Fantasy riser -- Bryce Young (and Jalen Coker?) |
I discussed Bryce Young and the Panthers in detail on Monday's Beyond the Box Score episode, this link will take you to that conversation. You can also watch some of my favorite throws from Young's Week 12 performance here. I thought that this was the best game that we have seen in Young's early NFL career. |
As it pertains to Coker, I was encouraged that Adam Thielen returned and didn't take on a large portion of the target share. With Diontae Johnson no longer around to compete for targets with, I thought that there was some possibility that Thielen might slide into the role that he played last year. Coker has primarily worked from the slot for the Panthers, his skill set is definitely more redundant with Thielen's than Xavier Legette's. With Legette contending with the difficult perimeter coverage of Trent McDuffie, the Panthers funneled a wildly-high 36% first-read target rate to David Moore. |
The last time that we saw Coker on the field, he was the one with a 36% first-read target rate. He may just step right back into a target-sponging role to close out the season. Asking Legette to go win with consistency on the perimeter is a tall order. He might be good enough to do it, but I'm not sure that we can reasonably expect high target totals for Legette while occupying this role. |
Fantasy riser -- T.J. Hockenson |
Fantasy risers -- Trey McBride |
This is more of a long-term note than anything, but it's still an important one to make. The per-route data that McBride turned in during his 2023 breakout was unbelievable. He's improved those rates across the board in 2024. |
Brock Bowers is the only tight end who I would rather roster than McBride in Dynasty formats, and there's a wide gap between those two and the TE3 in my mind. He looks poised for Mark Andrews type of career. |
And in the short-term, this may well be Fantasy's TE1 for the remainder of the season. McBride had an absurd 59% first-read target rate in Week 12. That's Brock Bowers-like volume, and it's coming in an offense that (I think) is much better than the Las Vegas Raiders. If the Cardinals could put more than six points on the board going forward and McBride could maybe find the end zone as a receiver at some point, his Fantasy point totals might really get out of control. |
Fantasy riser -- Jakobi Meyers |
Meyers is the first WR to be targeted 10+ times vs. the Denver Broncos. Prior to Week 12, no WR had recorded more than six receptions vs. Denver. Meyers had 10. |
Fantasy riser -- Jaxon Smith-Njigba |
I would have loved it if JSN's downfield usage from the two weeks prior sustained in Week 12, but we'll take what we can get. He again looked like clearly the best option in the passing game for the Seahawks, and Seattle again went away from DK Metcalf in the second half. It's going to be interesting to see how the target shares continue to evolve for the two players. |
Fantasy riser -- Jaylen Waddle |
You can watch Waddle's Week 12 cut up here. He looked dangerous as a downfield threat. It's been a long time since the Dolphins have threatened with explosive plays at the WR position in the way that Tua Tagovailoa and Waddle put on display in Week 12. Here's to hoping that it can continue and was not just a matchup-based thing against New England! |

If you don't know about it already, Dan and I created a second Beyond the Box Score episode that is exclusive to YouTube. We've had a ton of awesome guests help us get the show up and running, and we have both put a lot of work into that podcast project with an aim to make it fun and accessible for any level of NFL fan! You can support the project by watching, liking, commenting, and subscribing. Thanks for being here! |
