It's Friday, April 1, and today's headlines include President Joe Biden's remarks in support of trans surgeries and puberty blockers for children, a Christian education adviser who was fired over their "anti-gay" remarks, and Arizona's ban on gender reassignment surgeries for minors. | | In multiple documents released Thursday, which is observed by some as the Transgender Day of Visibility, President Joe Biden declared his support for allowing children and adolescents with gender dysphoria to undergo body mutilating surgeries or use puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to look more like the opposite sex despite unknowns about the longterm side effects. In the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Population Affairs "Gender Affirming Care and Young People" document, it states that "early gender-affirming care" for non-binary or trans-identified minors "is crucial to overall health and well-being as it allows the child or adolescent to focus on social transitions and can increase their confidence while navigating the healthcare system." Such gender-affirming care includes elective mastectomies, breasts enhancements, and the removal of genitals. | | The conservative American College of Pediatricians, an association of physicians and healthcare professionals "dedicated to the health and well-being of children," has long voiced its opposition to using puberty-blocking drugs on children suffering from gender dysphoria. "There is not a single long-term study to demonstrate the safety or efficacy of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries for transgender-believing youth," the organization said in a statement. "This means that youth transition is experimental, and therefore, parents cannot provide informed consent, nor can minors provide assent for these interventions. | NYC Mayor fires Christian education adviser following pressure from LGBT activists | | New York City Mayor Eric Adams dismissed one of his education advisers, who also serves as a pastor, after The New York Daily News reported on some of her past writings on sexuality and gender. Adams recently announced nine picks to the city's Panel for Education Policy, which "replaced the former Board of Education in 2022 and is part of the governance structure responsible for the city’s public schools." While the list initially included Rev. Kathlyn Barrett-Layne, the leader of Staten Island’s Reach Out and Touch Ministries, among the picks, members of the city's LGBT community put pressure on Adams to remove Barrett-Layne after The New York Daily News published an article highlighting what it characterized as "anti-gay" remarks from her past. Multiple reports indicate that the CDC is likely to end orders issued in March 2020 that call for noncitizens to be examined. Continue reading. | | Canadian pastor released from solitary confinement after 51 days in prison | | Canadian Pastor Artur Pawlowski of Street Church and the Cave of Adallum in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, was released from prison Wednesday after 51 days of being moved between a cell and solitary confinement. Pawlowski was arrested last month for allegedly inciting "mischief" by addressing a crowd of truckers gathered at the Canada-United States border to protest the mandate requiring truck drivers who transport goods between the two countries to either get the vaccine or quarantine for several days upon re-entry into the country. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defamed the truckers, who represented a wide swath of ethnicities and religions, as proponents of "antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-black racism, homophobia, and transphobia." Ahead of his release, Rebel News reporter Adam Soos reported that "all those gathered to greet Artur upon his release have been instructed to leave immediately under threat Artur would be arrested again should anyone speak with him before he leaves the Calgary Remand Centre grounds." | Arizona bans gender reassignment surgery on minors, biological males from women's sports | | Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, has signed bills banning biological men from competing in women's sports and preventing children under the age of 18 from undergoing gender reassignment surgery. Senate Bill 1138, which "delays any irreversible gender reassignment surgery until the age of 18," passed the Arizona Senate in a party-line vote of 16-12 on Feb. 24 and the Arizona House of Representatives on a party-line vote of 31-26 on March 24. Senate Bill 1165, which "creates a statewide policy to ensure that biologically female athletes at Arizona public schools, colleges, and universities have a level playing field to compete," similarly passed both the House and Senate on party-line votes.
