State Fair talks security plan
| Aug. 24, 2022 President Joe Biden announced a program to forgive $10,000 in federal student loans for most borrowers, and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients. The program, which has been talked about since Biden was elected, aims to help students clear out some of the debt they accumulate before they begin working. Michael Dean is the executive director of Lead MN, which advocates for students in the state's two-year community and technical colleges, a group that often has the highest default rates on student loans. "The $10,000 will have a huge impact for those lower income students, particularly that intermediate Technical College program that have a harder time paying off the debt. And so that's why we're extremely supportive of what's happening. Because fundamentally, this gives them some breathing room," Dean said. Dean says that will help these students to participate in the economy in ways they haven't before. They can spend more that month on groceries, find a better place to live, or buy a car.Subscribe to our Minnesota Today podcast to get up-to-date news twice daily. | |
