Biden visiting New Orleans as probe continues on terrorist attack

BY VICKI FERSTEL | Staff writer

President Joe Biden is visiting New Orleans today as the investigation of the New Year's Day terrorist attack raises more questions than answers. Here are the latest developments on the Bourbon Street assault that killed 14 people and injured dozens more:

The FBI is looking into recent trips terrorist Shamsud-Din Jabbar made to Egypt and Canada as well as previous visits to New Orleans and recent stops at Texas gun stores.

Had New Orleans police officers not quickly killed Jabbar, he might have detonated explosive materials left at two other points nearby.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is seeking federal assistance on the city’s security plans for the Super Bowl and Carnival season.

Experts say the city's new bollard system is not designed to protect against terrorist attacks.

The Saints' 27-19 loss Sunday to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was a fitting end to a grim campaign. So says sports columnist Jeff Duncan:

"It’s now time to get down to important matters — the task of rebuilding this once-proud organization."

Thousands of Louisiana public servants are among those to get their full Social Security benefits. Biden on Sunday signed into law the repeal of two provisions that had reduced the amounts these workers could receive in retirement.

Staff writer Mark Ballard explains what happens next.

LaToya Cantrell says expert will review new Bourbon Street bollard system to ensure safety

A tactical expert will examine the adequacy of a new bollard system that the city of New Orleans was in the middle of installing when a New Year’s Day truck attack killed 14 people and injured dozens more, Mayor LaToya Cantrell said on Sunday. Read more
