Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
NPR's Steve Inskeep

NPR's Steve Inskeep has been trying to get an interview with former President Donald Trump for six years.

Trump, who keeps mostly to friendly outlets like Fox News, Newsmax, and OANN these days, finally said yes. And the stunning interview, which aired Wednesday morning, did not disappoint.

The interview didn’t last long. After less than ten minutes of tough questions on his baseless claims of a stolen election, Trump bailed out, hanging up on Inskeep

The interview leading up to that hang-up was long enough, though, for some great questions, like this one: "Why is it that you think that the vast majority of your allies in the United States Senate are not standing behind you?"

Trump replied by absolutely raging at McConnell.

It was also enough time for Trump to praise the Covid vaccines — before slamming vaccine mandates and saying that the pandemic will “phase out” even if millions of people don’t get vaccinated.

Yesterday, in an interview with OAN, Trump bashed politicians who won't say whether they've been vaccinated or boosted (and we know who he means) as being "gutless." It took Inskeep circling back to get Trump to offer the "advice" to take them, however.

That sort of dogged pursuit of answers that eventually resulted in Trump storming off. It was a great, long overdue interview, well done by Inskeep.

MEDIA LOSER:
CNN Reporter Gonzalo Alvarado

A woman expressed her distress and that of others when she tried to stop a CNN reporter from doing a live stand-up in the middle of the funeral for Valentina Orellana Peralta, the 16-year-old girl who was tragically killed by an LAPD officer’s stray bullet.

In video posted to Twitter by Los Angeles-based journalist Frank Stoltze, CNN en Español correspondent Gonzalo Alvarado can be seen preparing to give a live report in front of a camera setup while the funeral takes place in the backgrond. An unidentified woman can be seen approaching him, and tells the reporter and the cameraman to "Kill it!"

Stoltze, who covers criminal justice and politics for public radio station KPCC, wrote "@CNN did a Liveshot from inside the sanctuary during the funeral for Valentina Orellana Peralta today. Someone tried to stop them, to no avail."

The video is painful to watch as the CNN reporter and crew coldly ignore the plea to stop setting up their camera shot while the remembrance was being spoke from the very nearby stage - Alvarado even refusing to make eye contact or acknowledge the funeral-goer's presence in any way.

Defiant of objections, the report went live Monday as mourners could be seen in the background.

No matter the importance of the story itself, or the difficulties of live reporting, the indifferent reaction of the reporter trying to get his shot set up is a very bad look.

The A-Block

Sellers: Manchin = Wallace

CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers was unsparing in his criticism of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and other moderate Democrats for their hesitation over abolishing the filibuster to pass voting rights reform, comparing them to the segregationist Alabama governor George Wallace.

Sellers made his comments in response to a speech Tuesday by President Joe Biden at Morehouse College in Atlanta, in which the president also invoked the specter of Wallace.

The Lead host Jake Tapper brought up the speech, calling it Biden's "strongest, starkest pitch yet for election reform,” and noting that progressive activists had been wanting Biden to take a strong stand on the issue.

Tapper said that while there were 50 votes among Senate Democrats to support both pieces of election reform legislation, but there were not enough votes to change the Senate rules to abolish the filibuster, which would require 60 votes. Manchin, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) were among those who had said they “had a lot of concerns” about that.

“Do you think today’s speech would have any impact on them?” Tapper asked Sellers.

“I mean, that is the million-dollar question,” Sellers replied, before going off in his answer.
