Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Jesse Watters

Jesse Watters has been named the permanent host of the 7 PM hour on Fox News. The announcement comes after previous host Martha MacCallum was moved to 3 PM about a year ago, and a rotating cast of hosts filled the 7 PM hour.

Watters got his break as a former producer and on-the-street host doing ambush-style interviews for The O’Reilly Factor, parlaying that into increasingly prominent roles at Fox News, including a co-hosting gig on The Five and his Saturday evening show, Watters' World. The promotion to primetime is his biggest break yet, putting an end to that weekend gig, but Watters will remain on The Five

No stranger to controversy, Watters's rhetoric has often been the subject of heated debate, but he seems to be approaching a Tucker Carlson-esque Teflon job security, in no small part due to his ratings successes.

In making the announcement, CEO Suzanne Scott touted Watters' "versatility and hosting acumen" and "deep connection to the audience" on his various shows. "We look forward to watching him expand his connection even further through this new solo weeknight hour.”

Watters said that he was "thrilled to take on this new challenge" and "grateful for the opportunity.”

MEDIA LOSER:
Conservatives Dunking on AOC
for Getting Covid

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has confirmed that she tested positive for the coronavirus. That news drew a great deal of mockery and giddy celebration from her right-wing critics.

Ocasio-Cortez, who is triple vaccinated for Covid, released a statement through her office saying “she is experiencing symptoms and recovering at home.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s diagnosis comes shortly after her vacation to Florida, where she made headlines by snapping at Republicans and accusing them of attacking her as a projection of their “deranged sexual frustrations” about her.

Hugh Hewitt wished her a quick recovery and encouraged everyone to "choose life" by getting vaccinated. Far too many of his compatriots on the right, however, took a much less graceful approach, openly attacking and mocking her, with many of the tweets taking the exact misogynistic tone they claim it's outlandish for her to complain about.

How about we just don't attack people for catching a contagious respiratory virus? True, Ocasio-Cortez is young and healthy, and protected by the very vaccines that many of her critics scorn, but there's no reason to cheer someone catching a disease that's killed over 800,000 Americans

The A-Block

We're still arguing about this? Really? Really?!

See that photo there of President Joe Biden? That's from his inauguration speech on Jan. 20, 2021. You know, the day that he was inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States. Because he won the 2020 election.

Your friendly neighborhood Mediaite newsletter correspondent doesn't think those are very complicated facts, but apparently they are to some people, because former President Donald Trump is stubbornly continuing to claim that the election was stolen from him, and so we are still debating this insanity more than a year after he lost.

Trump does have plenty of support among the GOP base. A recent poll showed that only 6 percent of Republicans believe Biden's victory was "definitely legitimate." Another 15 percent of Republicans said it was "probably legitimate," and an overwhelming number of Republicans are still doubting the results, with 25 percent saying Biden's win was "probably not legitimate" and 46 percent saying "definitely not legitimate."

Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) refuted Trump‘s claims the election was stolen, telling ABC’s This Week that “the election was fair, as fair as we’ve seen.”

“While there were some irregularities, there were none of the irregularities which would have risen to the point where they would have changed the vote outcome in a single state,” Rounds told host George Stephanopoulos. “We simply did not win the election, as Republicans, for the presidency.”

Unsurprisingly, Trump lashed out at Rounds, slamming him for "going woke" and declaring that he "will never endorse this jerk again."

One notable voice pushing back on Trump is Fox News' Brian Kilmeade. The Fox & Friends host has called out the former president twice in the past few days for pushing his election fraud nonsense. Americans need to accept the election results, Kilmeade said on Friday's Fox & Friends, and Trump's baseless claims don't help the country.

Kilmeade reiterated that point on Sunday's Media Buzz show, telling host Howie Kurtz that Trump needed to "learn to lose."

Trump's baseless claims of election fraud were the driving force that motivated the rioters who breached the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and we are somehow still debating the facts about that day too. It's like Russian nesting dolls of misinformation and tinfoil hattery. The former president is even touting a "fedsurrection" conspiracy theory -- one that would have occurred under his own DOJ.

The real problem, at least according to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), is the Democrats who are trying to "politicize" Jan. 6. Ok, sure.

Heroics, faster than a speeding locomotive

A Los Angeles area cop is being lauded as a hero after saving the life of an unnamed pilot, whose small airplane crash-landed on train tracks.

Remarkably dramatic bodycam footage has been released showing the cop pulling the pilot to safety split seconds before what appears to be a commuter rail train smashes into the crashed airplane.

The stunning footage was aired Monday morning on the TODAY show as part of its Headlines segment. Host Savannah Guthrie reported that the pilot was taken to the hospital where he was treated for cuts and bruises and is expected to be ok.
