In continuation of the BIG Research in Focus series centred on BIG representatives from different regions around the world, this December 2020 issue concentrates on breast cancer research in Southern Europe. The feature article provides us with valuable insights into breast cancer research in this part of the world. Breast cancer experts discuss recent progress, on-going studies and future strategies of breast cancer research in Southern Europe. The Mediterranean countries have seen major improvements in breast cancer care over the last 20 years, despite the heterogeneity of healthcare systems and research infrastructure. Promising initiatives are underway to reduce inequalities of care, build and extend cooperative research groups, encourage academic research and address the challenges of COVID-19. BIG against breast cancer, BIG’s dedicated philanthropy unit, conducts vital fundraising to support BIG’s clinical trials and research programmes that have no commercial interest but are crucial for breast cancer patients. The funds raised provide the means for BIG member groups and their affiliated hospitals, and other partners, to finance their efforts and patient participation in a study. This is made possible by the generosity of foundations, companies, ambassadors and individuals. The section “BIG Network” provides an overview of activities carried out by BIG HQ and BIG against breast cancer. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related public health measures, planned events had to be cancelled and we had to re-invent how to reach BIG’s community of supporters. Thanks to the precious contribution of BIG’s 56 collaborative member groups constituting the network, this issue also gives you a peek at some of their activities, including both their own trials and those run under the BIG umbrella. Finally, an overview of all the clinical studies and trials run within the BIG network is provided. We hope you will enjoy the reading! |
