Bill could take lunch break off the menu for young workers in Louisiana

BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer

A bill to repeal a law requiring employers to give child workers lunch breaks passed a Louisiana House committee on Thursday, part of a push by Republicans to remove constraints on employers and reduce aid for injured and unemployed workers.

State Rep. Roger Wilder, R-Denham Springs, who sponsored the child labor measure, said he filed the bill in part because children want to work without having to take lunch breaks.

New data shows teacher hiring in Louisiana increased by 2% in 2022-23 compared with the previous school year.

The number of teachers of color grew by 2%, but just over 30% of teachers are nonwhite, compared with nearly 60% of students, according the state’s annual “Educator Workforce Snapshot."

Angel Reese named herself the "Bayou Barbie" during her first season at LSU, and that nickname followed her throughout her time in Baton Rouge. Now a member of Chicago Sky in the WNBA, she has selected a new moniker. See what it is.
