Imagine you just walked into an important meeting to close a major account…
You sit down at the boardroom table only to realize, right there across from you is Bill Gates, the world’s 4th richest man.
You can already tell from the look on his face that before he agrees to give you a dime of his money…
He’s about to GRILL you.
What do you do?
Well, hopefully you came prepared…
Because Gates is famously impatient with anyone who wastes even a second of his time.
In fact, he’s so ruthlessly efficient that his daily schedule is planned right down to 5-minute increments (which he actually sticks to).
But there’s something else not everyone knows about old Bill…
Despite his obsessive focus on time optimization…
And his scathing attitude toward dawdling of any kind…
$132 billion dollar Bill Gates publicly praises laziness.
He’s been quoted to say:
“I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.”
Which might seem a bit out of character.
Yet if you think about this odd statement for a second, there’s a lot of truth to it…
So-called “laziness” often results in the shortest path to a desired result rather than doing unnecessary work.
But this doesn’t mean being a slothful couch potato…
It means preserving your time and attention for what actually matters…
So you can channel your energy into getting bigger, faster results.
Looking through this lens, you’ll see that most successful people AVOID extra work.
Instead they come up with strategic solutions and shortcuts as ways to save time.
For example…
Benjamin Franklin invented the first bifocal glasses, swimming “flippers”, and “long arm” reaching device.
Asked about his inventions, he said:
“I am the laziest man in the world. I invented all those things to save myself from toil.”
Good thing he did…
Because saving himself from toil helped him establish the US Postal Service…
Become one of the Founding Fathers who spurred the American Revolution…
And draft the United States Declaration of Independence.
Whether it’s Ben Franklin’s inventions, or Bill Gates’ most efficient employee…
Focusing on RESULTS over activity is key to success in life and business.
Why do I tell you all this?
Because it explains the #1 problem with mainstream “discipline” strategies these days.
In the quest to build discipline and mental toughness…
Most people are loading a gazillion extra time consuming tasks on their plate.
To avoid this trap, I recommend asking yourself ONE simple question:
What is the actual result I want to achieve?
IF your goal is to compete in a 24 or 48 hour ultramarathon…
Then hours of running to develop a David Goggins-esque “calloused mind” might serve you well.
BUT if you’re trying to quickly assemble an all-star sales team… or finish writing your book…
Then months of two-a-day workouts, daily cold plunges, or guzzling water and taking pee breaks every 10 minutes is guaranteed to slow you down.
Listen, those things are valuable in their own right…
Especially if your main goal is just building self-confidence.
But if you’re trying to improve discipline to increase productivity and reach your goals faster…
You MUST be realistic that there’s only so much time in a day to accomplish all you have to do.
True high performance discipline means hacking away at the inessential.
Build in bumpers and boundaries that keep you on track and focused on the things you NEED to do to get ahead…
Instead of adding extra challenges and tasks.
Because at the end of the day if you want to accomplish more, you need to do LESS.
