Good morning and thanks for joining us. Here are some of the day's top headlines.
Appointment power: A state Senate committee has passed a bill backed by Gov. Jeff Landry that would allow him to appoint the chairs and officers of all state boards. Currently, the governor gets to appoint members on some key boards only over several years, a system designed to avoid having policies reversed with every new administration. James Finn has this report.
Nyx nixed? New Orleans City Council member JP Morrell says he will propose rescinding the Mystic Krewe of Nyx's permit. Ridership in Nyx has shrunk, and the crowds have waned right along with it, after the controversial statements of the krewe's captain several years ago. A particularly dismal showing earlier this year only fueled discussion about whether it is time to pull the plug. The indefatigable Doug MacCash has the story.
Jazz Fest begins: The 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival starts today with Locals Thursday. Louisiana residents with a valid ID can get up to two tickets at the entrance for $50 each, with no additional fees. Keith Spera and Ian McNulty have you covered on what to listen to and eat if you're headed to the Fair Grounds today.
