Michael Markle, a member of the San Juan BitDevs meetup, believes that Bitcoin can help the people of Puerto Rico achieve self-sovereignty.
Markle highlights the history of currency in Puerto Rico, including the 1889 devaluation of the peso and the use of the U.S. dollar as legal tender on the island, which has left it vulnerable to the consequences of U.S. monetary policy.
He argues that Bitcoin could provide Puerto Rico with the independence and identity that it has been denied and that Pedro Albizu Campos, a Puerto Rican independence leader, would have supported the ideas that Bitcoin brings as a tool for independence.
Markle also suggests that Bitcoin could be used to rebuild the economy in Puerto Rico, which has been devastated by natural disasters and is suffering from high levels of poverty, and could provide financial inclusion for the underserved population. |
