1. RECORDING ACADEMY PRESIDENT PUT ON LEAVE DAYS BEFORE GRAMMYS: Recording Academy C.E.O. Deborah Dugan took over as leader of music’s governing board in the wake of sexist comments from her predecessor. Now, just 10 days before the Grammy Awards, Dugan has been put on leave while the academy investigates allegations of misconduct. Variety: “Sources close to the situation tell Variety that what may have taken place was a 'coup': a move by entrenched Academy veterans to discredit and remove Dugan, who came in promising significant changes to the organization, before she could establish herself with a successful first show. … While most Academy staffers were blindsided by the move, and most were not informed until minutes before it was announced, another insider said tensions had been building for some weeks, particularly after Dugan’s first board meeting as president/C.E.O. in November. At that meeting, the atmosphere was 'a little weird,' a source said. Outwardly, 'some people embraced the changes she was suggesting,' while others were less enthusiastic.”

2. PROTESTERS TO BOYCOTT AMAZON EVENTS AT SXSW: No Music For ICE, a collection of musicians protesting Amazon's licensing of software to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, announced it will picket events sponsored by the tech giant at South By Southwest in Austin. The protestors object to the federal agency’s policy of separating migrant families at the Southern border. The Fader: “In its statement, No Music For ICE encouraged ‘all artists, music fans, and supporters of basic human rights’ to join the boycott of Amazon's events. ‘Musicians should not provide credibility or cool points to a company that plays a direct role in the U.S. government’s brutal separation of families and cruel attacks on immigrant communities.’”

3. TORONTO FASHION WEEK CANCELED: The upcoming Toronto Fashion Week has been canceled, organizers announced on Tuesday, and it’s unclear whether the industry event will return for its September edition. Refinery 29: “The news, which was delivered to participating designers last week and announced today on Twitter, has shocked industry insiders and left brands scrambling. One designer says he only knew something was up when TFW stopped returning his emails. … This isn’t the first time the future of Toronto Fashion Week has been unclear. It’s had several iterations since it started in the late '90s. Event management company IMG bought it in 2012, then shut it down in 2016 due to lack of funding. That same year, it was bought by its current ownership, rebranded, and scaled down from a seven-day marathon to a three-day sprint showcasing Canadian designers in Yorkville Village. In an era when the relevance of fashion weeks around the world has been questioned, it’s no wonder TFW, a significantly smaller operation than, say, New York or Paris, would also be affected by a waning interest in the medium.”

4. DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE PETE BUTTIGIEG PLANS AN UPSCALE, CHEF-FOCUSED FUND-RAISER FOR HIS PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN: Despite the blowback he received for hosting an elite fund-raising dinner in a wine cave, presidential candidate and former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Pete Buttigieg has revealed plans for another upscale affair. The new soiree, called the “Nationwide Chefs for Pete Culinary Experience,” is a chef-focused gathering with a hefty price tag. The food will be cooked by Chez Panisse founder Alice Waters, while some local restaurateurs are scheduled to appear. Slated to be held somewhere in San Francisco on January 26, tickets offer a variety of price levels. Eater: “Tickets for the event started at $100, which the campaign calls the ‘friend’ level. Buttigieg does not appear to want for friends, as that category is marked as ‘sold out,’ but as of publication time, tickets remain for the $250 ‘supporter’ role and the $500 ‘advocate’ position. Folks hoping to actually rub shoulders with Buttigieg will actually have to shell out $1,000 for an ‘investor” level ticket, however—as Buttigieg has no plans to attend the SF event himself, only by dropping $1,000 (or more) would an attendee be guaranteed ‘admission to a future event with Mayor Pete.’”

5. OLYMPIANS PROHIBITED FROM POLITICAL STATEMENTS DURING 2020 TOKYO GAMES: Competitors in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be barred from making political gestures during the Games by the International Olympic Committee. Athletes will be unable to stage any protests or demonstration on the field of play; in the Olympic Village; during Olympic medal ceremonies; or during the opening, closing, or other official ceremonies. Any political messages that appear on signs or clothing will qualify as a protest, as will gestures and any "refusal to follow the Ceremonies protocol," the I.O.C. said. HuffPost: “‘It is important, on both a personal and a global level, that we keep the venues, the Olympic Village, and the podium neutral and free from any form of political, religious, or ethnic demonstrations,’ the committee said in a statement explaining the new guidelines. ... Disciplinary action will be taken on a case-by-case basis.”
