Black Tuesday: The Saints clean house

Good morning, and welcome to the January 17 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter.

Tuesday turned out to be D-Day for the Saints offensive coaching staff. Before the day was over, four Saints coaches had been either fired or hired elsewhere. Here's our lineup of coverage on one of the busiest news days of the year:

No Three-Pete

Among the flurry of changes, Pete Carmichael was by far the longest-tenured and most high-profile coach to be let go, leaving after 18 years and two tumultuous seasons as offensive coordinator. Fair of not, columnist Rod Walker believes it was a move that had to be made. Now, he opines, the pressure is on head coach Dennis Allen to find the right replacement.

House-cleaning

The Saints fired two other members of the offensive coaching staff on Tuesday, including one coach who was hired by Allen just two years ago. Matthew Paras has the details on the staff overhaul.

End of an era

Carmichael's departure signals the most significant step away from the Sean Payton era for the organization as it severs an 18-year relationship that dated to 2006. Luke Johnson documents the highs and lows of Carmichael's tenure and tells us what the move means for Allen, the organization and the offense.

Who's got next?

The Saints are in the market for a new offensive coordinator and our staff provides a preliminary list of potential coaches to replace Carmichael. And the list of candidates is an extensive one, with some high-profile names and under-the-radar prospects.

Another depature

Longtime Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas is leaving the Saints after nine seasons to take the same position with the New York Giants, Matthew Paras reports. The departure comes just days after Allen expressed his disappointment in the team's rushing offense this season.

Listen up!

Our crack coverage team -- sans yours truly, who was tied up in Pro Football Hall of Fame duties on Tuesday -- convened to break down all aspects of the big moves on an emergency episode of the Saints Insider podcast.

That's it for today. We'll have more news and analysis in the days ahead as the Saints continue to make news and moves this offseason.

Until next time ... cheers,

Jeff Duncan
