The aftermath of the Apalachee High School shooting continues to play out, with both suspected shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, and his father, Colin Gray, making their first court appearances yesterday to face charges in the deaths of two students and two teachers. Nine others were injured in the shooting spree on Wednesday. The charges against Colin Gray will be another test of whether parents can be held criminally responsible for their children’s actions. Colin Gray has been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children in the second degree. He was told he could face a maximum of 180 years in prison if convicted on all charges. The details of the case against him are so far limited. We know that his son was known to law enforcement. The older Gray told investigators last year that he was teaching his son about “firearms and safety” and how to hunt, according to transcripts. And at some point after the May 2023 investigation, Gray bought his son an AR-15-style rifle as a gift, law enforcement sources said. There are shades of similarities with the case in Oxford, Michigan, where a 15-year-old committed a mass shooting at his high school in 2021. His parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, were ultimately sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison. The charges against Gray, however, are much harsher. Legal experts weighed in on the factors a judge might consider in the case against Gray. Read the full story here. |

- Court records and transcripts shed light on the suspect and his family. His mother was arrested last year on family violence charges, while his father described the teen’s troubles at home and at school.

The Boeing capsule that was meant to send two astronauts into space for an eight-day journey returned safely to Earth overnight without them, marking the end of a three-month test flight beset by difficulties. The Starliner touched down in New Mexico’s White Sands Space Harbor at 12:01 a.m. ET. Its smooth journey back from the International Space Station suggests that the two NASA astronauts it carried to space — Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams — probably could have flown home safely. But problems with the Starliner’s thrusters and leaking helium, both detected soon after it launched, led the agency’s top officials to decide to call on SpaceX for a return flight early next year. Read more about the mission and landing. |

The fight for Rupert Murdoch's global media kingdom — which includes Fox News and the Wall Street Journal — is headed to court next week, as the 93-year-old billionaire's children fight over a trust that calls for his eldest son, Lachlan Murdoch, to inherit his throne. Three of Rupert Murdoch's other children — James, Elisabeth and Prudence — are pushing back against the terms of the trust and insist that all four siblings continue to receive equal voting shares. Murdoch is one of the most powerful and influential media titans of the modern age, and intrigue over the family has inspired the HBO series "Succession" and behind-the-scenes books. The feud goes before a judge in Reno, Nevada, but the case filings and proceedings are shrouded in secrecy. Here's why. |

Not long ago, singles run clubs amounted to a couple dozen people mostly focused on working out. A few viral videos later, romance-deprived New Yorkers are now flocking to weekly meet-ups in droves. Attendees said they're so over dating apps, and they're willing to sweat for an alternative. But runners say the now-massive groups can be rife with some of the same drama: people ghost, lie or run right past you with a new date du jour. It turns out the clubs present a similar paradox-of-choice problem as the apps. NBC News Asian America reporter Sakshi Venkatraman dropped in on one run club and talked to some who feel like it has become just another NYC club that's overrun — literally. — Jessi Prois, NBC Asian America editorial director |
