BC Hydro encourages customers to push electricity savings forward as the clocks fall back

As daylight saving time comes to an end and the days get colder and darker, BC Hydro is reminding British Columbians about energy-efficient choices that will help save power and money. On average, heating can account for up to 50 per cent of a household’s energy use during the cold, fall and winter months. That’s why BC Hydro is encouraging customers to make no- or low-cost changes that could lead to big savings as the weather cools down.

BC Hydro is emphasizing the importance of electrical safety this storm season as electrical contact incidents resulting in serious injury are on the rise. Damage to BC Hydro’s electrical infrastructure is more common during the fall and winter months as strong wind, heavy rain and snow can cause trees and branches to knock down power lines and damage other electrical equipment.

As part of FortisBC’s commitment to providing innovative energy solutions to its customers, the company today announced a new pilot program for businesses. The program uses first in the world carbon capture technology to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and save energy.


City of Vancouver, FortisBC working together to tackle climate change

FortisBC and the City of Vancouver announced today that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to team up on climate action projects to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and increase investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy, while maintaining access to natural gas for residents and businesses. The MOU supports the City of Vancouver in pursuing its commitment to improving air quality and reducing GHG emissions in the region by 80 per cent below 2007 levels before 2050, which aligns with B.C. and Canada’s energy and climate goals.

Alberta takes on Burnaby over Trans Mountain pipeline permit delays

The latest front in the pipeline battle between Alberta and British Columbia is Burnaby. Alberta’s NDP government notified the National Energy Board on Thursday that it will intervene as Kinder Morgan Canada Ltd. seeks a determination from the board to allow work to begin on the Burnaby portion of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, even though the municipality has not issued permits.


Deepwater Horizon hero Mike Williams has a message for Calgary oil executives

Within two weeks of surviving the Deepwater Horizon disaster, barely functioning physically or emotionally, Mike Williams was picked up on his release from the hospital and driven to a hotel where 28 lawyers were waiting to grill him. Barefoot, still in a hospital gown because his own clothes were so badly damaged, Williams was seated in the middle of a large room.
