The threat to Black colleges, justifiable killings and Amazon's foray into Metairie

By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor

UNSOLVED: Louisiana is home to six historically Black colleges or universities, and three of them have been targeted in recent weeks in a wave of bomb threats to Black colleges across the United States. No one has been arrested. "You could hear the anxiety right in their voice," said the president of Xavier University's Student Government Association, who field calls from worried students. "Quickly enough, the anxiety and the nervousness turn into frustration, righteous frustration. Why us?"

JUSTIFIED: Most killings in New Orleans are crimes. But in two fatal shootings from 2020, police and prosecutors have now decided not to charge the killers. In one, a Paris Avenue homeowner perched on a second-floor balcony shot dead an intruder in his yard. In the other, a motorist killed a man who approached him at a Gentilly convenience store.

MIXED SIGNALS: It's true that Amazon has applied for a permit to remodel a previous tenant's retail space inside Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie. But on the same day, the online retail behemoth said it is backing away from bookstores, pop-ups and shops carrying toys and home goods, to concentrate on grocery and department stores.

MADNESS, IN MARCH: Kim Mulkey's Tigers earned LSU's first NCAA Tournament victory since 2014, and the Loyola men advanced to their first NAIA semifinal since 1946.

JUSTIFIED

One man killed an intruder on his lawn. Another shot a man who approached his car. Neither led to charges.

The shooting death of a man who jumped over a neighbor’s gate and another who aggressively approached a motorist at a gas station won't lead to criminal charges, at least for now, according to the New Orleans Police Department. Read more

An Amazon store in Lakeside? Permit sought, but company strategy raises questions

On the same day that retail behemoth Amazon filed a permit to remodel a retail space at Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie, the company announced it was shuttering many of its retail stores, including the ones that typically would go into malls.  Read more
