| National Poetry Month Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month is a special occasion that celebrates poets' integral role in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K-12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and-of course-poets, marking poetry's important place in our lives. Whether in schools and universities, around the dinner table at home, or at the office water cooler, National Poetry Month is a time to discuss this powerful art form, debate it, and learn from the poets of the past. All of this is an attempt to inspire younger generations to create poetry that allows them to express themselves and their experiences, making a difference for individuals as well as for society as a whole. | Victor LaValle Victor LaValle is the author of the short story collection Slapboxing with Jesus, five novels, The Ecstatic, Big Machine, The Devil in Silver, The Changeling, and Lone Women. He is also the creator and writer of two comic books Victor LaValle's DESTROYER and EVE. His novel, The Changeling, will soon be airing on Apple TV+ starring LaKeith Stanfield. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including the World Fantasy Award, British Fantasy Award, Bram Stoker Award, Whiting Writers' Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, Shirley Jackson Award, American Book Award, and the key to Southeast Queens. He was raised in Queens, New York. He now lives in the Bronx with his wife, the writer Emily Raboteau, and their kids. He teaches at Columbia University. Check out his books here. |
