UNIVERSAL BOOKENDS
Apparently people are currently craving silence, solitude and slowness. The inbox fills up daily with articles about how to slow down frenetic schedules, clock time for solitude, and seek silence in between incessant chatter.
According to Adobe's stock image team, as told by the online art magazine Artsy, the most popular screensaver choices are serene natural settings or contemplative moments accompanied by a mug of something soothing to drink, "all rendered in a calm palette of blues, whites, greys, and greens." Based on gallery visits this past year It seems to be the current color palette for artists as well.
Bland. In my opinion!
Dark and light, warm and cool, bright and subtle coexist with the day beginning and ending. Contrast makes life whole. Art born out of contrast mirrors wholeness.
At the same time our society tries to hang onto it's hat through slow, silent solitude, thousands are taking to the streets fervently calling for justice and equanimity to prevail. Apropos of opposite actions showing up together, Oprah Winfrey sagely touches on this in her Backstage interview post Golden-Globe-award-recipient-speech:
When something really negative is brewing, there is the direct opposite reaction that is also possible. For every action there is an equal opposite reaction. So when something as big as what started to happen in October, (referring to Harvey Weinstein) there is an opportunity for a powerful growth - how do we use this moment to elevate what is happening instead of continually victimizing ourselves? Oprah vulnerably, deftly, shares about the sadness in her 7-year old self and personal authenticity while reigning with casual formal elegance, receiving questions on a Hollywood stage.
