On this day in 1978, Canberrans were having conversations about whether or not particular children's books endorsed racist, xenophobic, sexist or homophobic views. Nicola Liebke, 10, wrote to The Canberra Times to express her dismay at Woden Library for refusing to stock books written by British children's writer Enid Blyton. "I do love Enid Blyton books and so do a number of my friends. But [the government] won't allow them in the Woden Library," she said.
