While there is good news on the progress of vaccinations this morning, it seems clear that the pandemic is worse in the UK now than at any previous point. Was the current situation unavoidable or the inevitable consequence of ministerial mistakes? Daniel Capurro sifts through the key moments of the last year and argues in a stinging piece that our current predicament is the predictable result of a deliberate shift away from listening to the science.
The BBC is meant to be in the midst of a culture change under its new director-general, Tim Davie. If Ian Botham’s inbox is anything to go by, the plan might not be working. Lord Botham writes in his column of the many correspondents angry at the Corporation for continuing to push an agenda at odds with their country values.
Of the many institutions struggling under the strain of the pandemic, the Church of England is perhaps the most surprising. Finally, we heard the sad news of the passing last week of Michael Apted. Few individuals have produced such revolutionary work as Up, the documentary series that followed 14 Britons over decades. Ben Lawrence writes about the wide-reaching influence of the series and why it could only have worked under Apted’s hand.
