A wildfire in the BWCA

Good morning and welcome to Thursday.

More cloud coverage today in Minnesota with periods of showers and thunderstorms and highs in the 70s. The latest from Updraft.

There were multiple tornado sightings south of the Twin Cities last night.

Here's what else to know today:

The Boundary Waters Bezhik Fire

Rain and humidity slowed the wildfire burning in the BWCA, but some living in northeastern Minnesota wonder if this is a sign of more fires to come.

The fire burned in a remote part of the Boundary Waters — an area of red and white pine and rocky outcroppings.

"It really is cyclical,” said Ellen Bogardus-Szymaniak, the district ranger for the Tofte District of the Superior National Forest. “It's about every 10 to 12 years we have a fire season. A big one."

Aniya Allen's life taken to gun violence

After her family's car was caught in a shootout in north Minneapolis Monday night, 6-year-old Aniya Allen has died.

The kindergartener at Cityview Community School "used to tell her mother she wanted to be a ballerina teacher when she grew up," reports the Star Tribune. "Everyone who know Niya know she's a bright kid, she's smart, intelligent, she's sweet," her mother Antrice Sease told the paper.

Allen's death comes in the wake of two other young Minneapolis children shot in the last several weeks: 10-year-old Ladavionne Garrett, Jr., shot in the head on April 30 riding in a car with his parents, and 9-year-old Trinity Ottoson-Smith, shot while jumping on a trampoline.

Garrett and Ottoson remain hospitalized, and police haven't yet made any arrests.
