The Bottom Line

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month 2020
How You Can Get Involved

Each year, Bowel Cancer Australia dedicates the month of June to raising much needed awareness about Australia's second deadliest cancer, and much needed funds to support the charity's work in the prevention, early diagnosis, research, quality treatment and the best care for everyone affected by bowel cancer.

Although Bowel Cancer Awareness Month will look a little different this year - as we practice social distancing or work from home – it’s important to remember whilst we may be isolated, we’re not alone.

Stay connected and join us this June. There are lots of ways you can get involved:

1. Download our free awareness posters and flyers and pop one up on your front door or fence, or on a window inside your home or car.

2. Add a virtual Bowel Cancer Awareness Ribbon to your Facebook profile picture and encourage your family and friends to do the same.

3. Host a Bowel Cancer Awareness Month virtual fundraiser or awareness activity through Everyday Hero or Go Fundraise.

4. Hold a virtual Brunch for Bowel Cancer on Red Apple Day or another apple-themed online fundraiser through Everyday Hero or Go Fundraise.

5. Connect with Bowel Cancer Australia on FacebookTwitter and Instagram and spread the word by sharing, re-posting and tweeting Bowel Cancer Awareness Month messages.

6. Find out about bowel cancer prevention, risks and symptoms and share what you learn with others via Social Media, email or direct message.

7. Donate today to help save lives and to improve the health and wellbeing of people living with bowel cancer. Every donation over $2 is fully tax-deductible.

New Director Heidi Riddell brings experience and perspective

I joined the Bowel Cancer Australia Board for both professional and personal reasons.

I started my career as a physiotherapist and then joined consulting firm, Ernst & Young, as a graduate just over 20 years ago, where I qualified as a Chartered Accountant and built my career as a Risk professional, advising clients on how to create trust and value through strong governance and risk management.

I’m committed to bringing my experience as a healthcare practitioner, Risk professional and managing partner to Bowel Cancer Australia’s board and executive, to help the charity achieve its vision of having an everlasting impact on our health future - where no Australian dies from bowel cancer and all those diagnosed receive the support they need.

But I also have personal reasons for wanting to contribute to Bowel Cancer Australia. I have Lynch Syndrome and am a bowel cancer survivor.

I want people to trust their bodies when things don’t feel right, be aware of their family history, and know that you're #Never2Young for bowel cancer.

Am I at increased risk for COVID-19 if I have, or have had, bowel cancer?

We know there is a lot of attention right now on the new coronavirus and the COVID-19 pandemic, and information is continually evolving.

Preparedness and awareness are paramount in these times, especially if you are newly diagnosed, living with or beyond bowel cancer, due to an increased risk for coronavirus infection.

Bowel Cancer Australia updates our dedicated COVID-19 webpage regularly to help you better understand the impact these changes will have on bowel cancer patients, carers and loved ones.

It contains facts about COVID-19 and its symptoms; offers tips and tools from medical experts for taking care of yourself and others; and provides details about recent changes designed to keep you safe from infection that may impact colonoscopy access, specialist visits, and delivery of cancer treatments.

There’s also information on how to manage anxiety for those who are feeling overwhelmed; things you can do to stay active even when indoors; tips for eating well; and questions you may want to ask your healthcare team.
