After years of tireless effort and generous contributions from our dedicated supporters, fundraisers, and donors, we are excited to announce that we will be more than doubling the number of specialist Bowel Care Nurses supporting bowel cancer patients and their families across Australia.

More than eight in ten patients have identified access to a specialist nurse in-person or by phone as one of the most important aspects of their care coordination.

In the lead-up to World Cancer Day on Sunday 4 February, Bowel Cancer Australia and Icon Cancer Centre have announced plans to place specialist Bowel Care Nurses in select Icon Cancer Centres across Australia, offering greater support for patients with bowel cancer and helping to close the care gap.

Bowel Cancer Australia began providing telehealth support to bowel cancer patients across Australia over twelve years ago, in response to patient support preference and long before it became common practice.

The new specialist Bowel Care Nurses will help to further #CloseTheCareGap by providing more bowel cancer patients with the care they deserve, as close to home as possible, so they can live their best lives.

”We know that patients can become overwhelmed when it comes to navigating the health system following a cancer diagnosis, they may struggle to manage side effects during treatment or feel worried about the challenges of life after cancer. We’re proud to partner with Bowel Cancer Australia to provide our patients with additional support to help them navigate this difficult time in their lives,” says Icon Cancer Centre Australia and New Zealand CEO, Paul Fenton.

Recruitment of the specialist Bowel Care Nurses will commence in February.

We are excited to see so many of our supporters signing up for the World Cancer Day 5K Challenge and creating teams to get active and close the gap.

It's not too late to make plans to take action, whether big or small.

The World Cancer Day 5K Challenge encourages you to individually or collectively complete a loop of 5 kilometres by running, cycling, swimming, walking, roller-skating, hiking, skateboarding or any other preferred activity, and symbolically close the care gap.

Create an online fundraising page for Bowel Cancer Australia or make a donation.

Then share on social and nominate 5 friends or colleagues to do the same.

Take a buddy with you or bring your pet along, and symbolically close the gap together. The more the merrier.

What can you do to help us close the gap in bowel cancer care?

This Sunday, February 4, is World Cancer Day, and we’re calling on you to play your part in creating a bowel cancer-free world.

While we live in a time of awe-inspiring advancements in (bowel) cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment, many who seek cancer care hit barriers at every turn.

Join Bowel Cancer Australia’s World Cancer Day social media campaign by sharing your lived experiences and helping us to spread the word about one (or more) of these inequities in bowel cancer care.

+ Despite being the third most diagnosed cancer, bowel cancer patients don’t receive the same level of support as other common cancers.

+ 1 in 9 new bowel cancer cases now occur in Australians under age 50, and it is the deadliest cancer for Australians aged 25-44.

+ Bowel cancer patients have experienced some of the longest waits for access to new treatments.

+ Your health matters, no matter your age. Join us in championing for expanding eligible National Bowel Cancer Screening Program screening ages as well as greater access to timely, affordable colonoscopy.

This year’s World Cancer Day campaign is all about working together to reimagine a world where millions of preventable cancer deaths are saved and access to life-saving cancer treatment and care is equitable for all.

Everyone deserves access to cancer care. The time to act is now.
