May 2022
Hello Voornaam,
I’m happy to share yet another study that recently published on the positive effects of using BrainHQ for people with chronic brain fog after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Not only did the study’s BrainHQ training group show significant improvements in memory, executive function, and attention, but brain scans also showed better connectivity in the brain in a resting state (i.e., even while not doing the exercises).

You can find the details of the newest study here. This study follows two published last year on BrainHQ and persistent cognitive issues due to TBI: one conducted at military and VA hospitals and published in July in the journal Brain and another conducted at NYU and published in September in the journal NeuroRehabilitation.

The Latest in Brain Food: Cranberries

Cranberries are rich in two types of flavonoids—plant compounds that studies have shown might deliver brain benefits. That’s why scientists in the UK decided to study whether a daily intake of cranberries (in this case a powder equal to about a cup of cranberries) could improve cognitive function. They found that the group of study subjects who had the cranberries significantly improved in one form of memory, and increased blood flow to three areas of the brain. There are some limitations to the study, though. Learn more.

Why Milk (Yes, Milk) May Be a Key for Brain Therapies

To deliver drugs directly to the brain, those drugs have to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier—a structure that protects the brain from harmful substances. That has been a stumbling block for new therapies. Milk might have the answer: it contains tiny nanoparticles called exosomes that can and do cross into the brain. Scientists are now studying how to attach drugs to exosomes to treat brain cancer and other conditions. Although it’s still several years away from treatment in humans, it’s promising work. Sleep Apnea and Memory

It’s become clear that good quality sleep is very important for cognitive health and function. Sleep apnea can affect that, with research showing a 26% increase in the rate of cognitive impairment among people who have sleep apnea. But a new study shows that treating sleep apnea can improve memory in people with mild cognitive impairment—at least in the short term. More studies are needed to understand the long-term effect of sleep apnea treatment. Learn more

New Study: Short-Term Mindfulness Does Not Change the Brain

Some research has suggested that practicing mindfulness can drive structural changes in the brain. But the results of a new MRI study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison showed that eight weeks of mindfulness training did not result in brain changes. The study researchers pointed out that perhaps changing the brain requires more than eight weeks, or a more focused type of mindfulness might be needed. Learn more.

The Amazing Plasticity of the Brain

Our BrainHQ exercises are based on the science of neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to rewire itself. But for a particularly astounding example of brain plasticity, look at the case of a woman who goes by “EG.” She is missing a large chunk of her brain—her left temporal lobe, an area of the brain thought to be very important for language processing—and yet speaks two languages, has a graduate degree, and has otherwise experienced very few effects of this deficit. Her plastic brain has compensated. Learn more.
