Good morning, Marketer, we hope you were able to take a break this weekend.

Should you be investing in upper-funnel awareness and branding campaigns or performance advertising right now? That question is being hotly debated in a lot of places, including major earnings reports, as we noted last week.

Performance seems to be winning. By nature, it’s more immediate. Often, it’s more measurable. But what are companies overlooking when they pull back on top-of-funnel brand campaigns?

New consumer data from Survata makes a strong case for brand marketing and argues that trusted brands are winning during the pandemic. That survey and other evidence point to brand visibility being more important than ever — and that brands that continue to build awareness will emerge stronger.

This was the heart of a discussion on Friday’s Live with Search Engine Land, led by our own Greg Sterling.

Panelist Amy Bishop, owner of digital marketing agency Cultivative, said she’s been seeing lower CPMs for many of her clients’ higher funnel campaigns. “If you’re not running upper funnel, this might be the time to try because there is less competition and it’s cheaper [right now],” said Bishop. Enjoy the attention glut while it lasts

Across industries, producers of “virtual events” are reporting stunning rates of attendance and engagement. Let’s face it. The NFL draft typically gets good ratings, but this year experienced audience increases of as much as 40% for some sessions. Unprecedented.

Just over a week ago, the team here at Third Door Media produced the virtual Discover MarTech event, which drew 5x more attendees than any MarTech conference in our history. And we did it in less than three weeks of promotional efforts. Don’t get me wrong, having nearly 9,000 registrants was something we were proud of, but it got me wondering about sustainability.

Most people working from home (and not spending hours commuting) has been a shot of adrenaline into the arteries of the attention economy. We’re experiencing an unprecedented attention glut. There’s just more time in the current landscape for discretionary use.

It won’t last, even if changes to the workplace that enable more to be done virtually are lasting. The demand for efficiency will ensure that any discretionary time is occupied.

So, enjoy the success you’re having virtually now. It’s not going to last forever.

TikTok, Facebook make some things easier

FACEBOOK <> GOOGLE. Facebook users in the U.S. and Canada can now export Facebook photos to Google Photos. The portability feature that is already available in several international markets is the result of Facebook’s participation in the Data Transfer Project, Techcrunch reported.

Why we care. As we noted when Facebook first started testing this tool, smaller businesses in particular that use the Facebook Photos feature for media storage will now be able to quickly move assets between platforms, And, as TechCrunch points out, the release comes ahead of a FTC hearing on data portability. Facebook has been under pressure to make it easier for users to access and control their own data.

REDDIT YANKS CHAT. After just a day, Reddit pulled the plug on chat rooms in subreddits. The feature called “Start Chatting” was pulled due to user complaints and functionality bugs. Some subreddit moderators had protested the inclusion of the chat button to their communities. The Verge reported, moderators “were not given the opportunity to opt out and did not have oversight to run the chat rooms.”

Why we care. Reddit told The Verge it had received positive early feedback on the chat room feature and plans to tweak the Start Chatting interface and give moderators more control over it.

TIKTOK RE-SHOOT. With a new “Adjust Clips” video editing feature, you can re-shoot and edit specific sections of your TikTok videos.

Why we care. Let’s face it, no matter how good you are, getting the perfect run through is hardly ever easy. The new feature will make it easier for creators and brands to get their TikTok videos just the way they want them.
