BREAKING: Attorney General Merrick Garland hits pause on federal executions
Attorney General Merrick Garland ordered a temporary stop Thursday to scheduling further federal executions while the practice is under review, citing the arbitrariness of capital punishment and "the troubling number of exonerations" in death penalty cases. Federal executions restarted in 2020 under then-Attorney General William Barr after a nearly two-decade moratorium.
