Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City have ended their lockout of union workers.
Less than 24 hours after suspending operations and locking out workers represented by the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, both railroads announced Thursday evening that they would begin implementing plans to resume regular operations.
The two rail carriers acted in response to action by Canada’s Minister of Labour and Seniors Steven MacKinnon, who directed the Canada Industrial Relations Board to impose final binding arbitration between the union and both railroads.
Until the arbitration process is completed and new deals are reached, MacKinnon also directed the Canada Industrial Relations Board to extend the term of the union’s previous contracts.
