Justin Trudeau said that he will resign as the leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party, triggering a race for his replacement as prime minister.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide competitive process,” said Trudeau, who has governed for nine years after sweeping into power in 2015.
