Breaking down the winners, losers and surprises from cutdown day

Good morning, and welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for Wednesday, August 28.

The cuts are in.

After a month of training camp and three preseason games, the Saints whittled their roster to the NFL-maximum 53 players on Tuesday.

Let's take a look at our coverage from a busy day on Airline Drive:

The (probably not) final 53

The Saints trimmed their roster from 90 to 53 players and are expected to continue making moves in the days ahead as they form their roster for the start of the regular season. Matthew Paras takes a position-by-position look at the depth chart after the flurry of roster moves on Tuesday.

Getting younger

There were plenty of interesting calls by the Saints front office and coaching staff among the moves, led by the decision to keep four undrafted rookie free agents. Luke Johnson looks at the long shots, big games and head-scratchers of the day.

Surprise, surprise

There were a few mild surprises among the roster cuts, both of the good and bad variety. Columnist Rod Walker takes an in-depth look at the moves and tells us which transactions he did and didn't like.

That'll do it for today. We'll have more news and analysis in the days ahead as the Saints make more roster moves and start their preparation for the season opener against Carolina.

Until next time, cheers....
