Amber McLaughlin died by lethal injection Tuesday night in Missouri, becoming the first openly transgender person to be executed in the U.S. McLaughlin was convicted in the 2006 murder of Beverly Guenther, whom she was in a relationship with before her transition.

McLaughlin had sought clemency, citing her depression and traumatic childhood abuse, but was denied.
