Special counsel Jack Smith defended his investigation into President-elect Donald Trump's efforts to maintain power after he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, in a report that was shared with Congress and obtained by NBC News.

"While I relied greatly on the counsel, judgment, and advice of our team, I want it to be clear that the ultimate decision to bring charges against Mr. Trump was mine," Smith wrote in a letter accompanying the report.
