The New York Federal Reserve’s gauge of manufacturing activity in the region jumped out of contraction territory in March, rising to a reading of 0.62 from -16.64 in February. Wall Street expected a much more moderate rise to -10 for the month. Readings above 0 point to expansion, while those below indicate contraction.
