The Senate advanced a bill to codify federal protections for same-sex marriage Wednesday, signaling that the legislation has sufficient Republican support to pass.

The House passed similar legislation in July amid fears that the Supreme Court could rescind the right for same-sex couples to marry after overturning Roe v. Wade. The House will need to take up the Senate’s version of the bill before sending it to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature.
