The U.S. Senate voted 55 to 45 to allow witnesses to be considered in the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, a decision that will likely extend the trial after it appeared headed to a quick end on Sunday. The Senate vote allows debate on which witnesses could be called and what rules might apply to the process. The request was a surprise by House Democratic impeachment managers, who had previously said they believed they made their case without the use of witnesses. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., the lead impeachment manager, told the Senate he wanted to hear testimony and see notes from Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, of Washington, who voted to impeach Trump after a discussion with House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy about his attempts to get Trump to call off the mob on Jan. 6. |
