Former President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he has been notified by special counsel Jack Smith he is the target of an investigation by a Washington, D.C.-based grand jury examining the efforts to overturn the 2020 election, according to a statement. It was not immediately clear what the charges are or whether anyone else received a target letter. Smith, appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November, has led a sprawling investigation in the almost eight months since. Smith secured an indictment before a Florida grand jury last month, charging Trump on 37 counts in connection with his handling of classified documents and alleged efforts to obstruct it. |
