Amount of back taxes owed remains a barrier for Broome, St. George leaders

In the latest salvo in their disagreement, East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome barked back at leaders of St. George on Thursday over the latest proposal concerning how much tax money the city-parish owes the new city.

Broome says she cannot support the most recent pitch because it contains a loophole that "could cost East Baton Rouge Parish taxpayers tens of millions of dollars."

A woman faced the convicted murderer of her nephew in court on Thursday and told him he would spend the rest of his life tormented by shame and guilt. “These are your new companions now, and they don’t relent,” Jamee Williams said to Alvin Joseph Allen III.

District Judge Brad Myers handed Allen an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole for the killing.

A Baton Rouge company is trading swings with an apparel brand backed by Tiger Woods in a dispute over trademarks. Both have logos that feature striped, leaping tigers.

“The first time we saw their logo, my reaction was, wow that looks way too similar,” said Jack Karavich, CEO of local firm Tigeraire.
