Startup Uses High-Performance Cloud to Create 3D Medical Models
“I don’t need a simulation of a healthy heart. I need a virtual heart that is as close as possible to the diseased heart of the patient I’m treating,” says cardiologist Dr. José Guerra. That’s why he works with startup ELEM Biotech. ELEM grew out of work done at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and is now using cloud-based high-performance computing from Oracle to bring this kind of 3D model to the healthcare industry.

Streamlined Recruitment Sends Positive Message
At job fairs, Arizona Federal Credit Union always pulls in a crowd of hopeful applicants. One reason? Job seekers can fill out, sign, and submit applications electronically—on the spot. “Our approach tells applicants, ‘We’re interested in talking to you, and, yes, we are a great place to work,’” says Elias Medina, director of recruitment and training. Five other big benefits since it adopted Oracle Human Capital Management Cloud.

DBAs
What’s Next for DBAs?
Database professionals know that their jobs are changing. But right now most operate in a hybrid cloud-and-on-premises world where “all of those fundamentals—they haven’t gone away,” says Ray Smith, president of the Independent Oracle Users Group. “We’re still talking about security, availability, and tuning.” Smith’s advice on what DBAs should prepare for next.

Scientific workloads have been slow to move to the cloud, but that’s starting to change. Public clouds are more likely to have the newest, most powerful CPU and graphics processing chips, as vendors continually add new hardware to their data centers. CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is investigating the use of Oracle cloud services to monitor data from its massive collider. Oracle’s new offering.
