Research shows that 1.2 million American entrepreneurs quit every year due to burnout…
Some say it was the long hours…
Others said it was the little pay and having to work every day…
But you know who didn’t burn out?
Jesus.
He taught all day long…
He didn’t do it for the money…
He traveled between cities on foot or by boat.
Raised the dead. Fed the hungry. Clothed the poor. Drove out demons.
Good honest work, six days a week, twelve+ hours a day, with just one day off.
He didn’t eat much or have much.
So shouldn’t he have “burned out” from not making money?
No, because I don’t think lack of money is a real reason for burnout.
But shouldn’t he have burned out from working so much?
After all, he didn't do self-care rituals like ice baths or spa weekends…
Nope, again, those aren’t real causes of burnout (and won’t fix burnout if you have it)
As I’ve studied entrepreneur burnout…
I’ve realized it’s not about hours worked or money made…
It’s usually because people that “suffer” from burnout lack 5 specific things.
Six years ago, I watched a 62-year old man speak for six hours straight at a business seminar… and not once did I see him take a drink of water.
I was astounded.
His name… Grant Cardone.
"You don't burnout," Cardone said, "You lose purpose! You lose your meaning. When I'm tired, I just look at my purpose."
Now I know ol’ GC ain’t everybody’s cup of tea…
But regardless of whether you love him or hate him…
We can all draw an important lesson here.
Cardone wakes up every morning with youthful energy… he produces more content and does more deals than 99.99% of men that are 1/3 of his age.
It’s not because he works fewer hours than younger men…
It’s because he AVOIDS the 5 common causes of burnout like the plague.
I’ll cover each one in more depth in a future email…
But, in short, the 5 causes of burnout are:
1. Comparison Syndrome (comparison to competitor / other people further ahead than you are)
2. Negative Self Talk (“I suck” “I can’t do it” “I just don’t have what it takes”)
3. Lack of Vision (no clarity on where you’re trying to go)
4. No WHY (no big, emotional motivator attached to goals)
5. No Accountability (no one to call you out on your BS) All of these cause frustration…
Frustration makes you tired and angry…
These make you lose motivation and society ascribes this to “burnout”.
I believe this to be incorrect – and in fact harmful to entrepreneurs that need support and not a reason to give up.
Viktor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning, said:
“Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any 'how'.”
And so when you are tired…
Turn away from the external material influence of the world…
And turn inward to revisit your purpose, your BIG WHY, and your mission.
Your WHY will get you through any who, what, where, and how.
