Royal tours are still keenly anticipated, but it's fair to say in the 1950s the excitement levels were something else altogether. On this day in 1958, the front page reported on the "tumultuous reception by thousands of people" for the Queen Mother's visit to Canberra. Her Majesty had spent the previous day at events at Albert Hall and the Australian War Memorial. "This remarkable edifice to the memory of the war dead obviously fascinated the Queen Mother. The artistic colouring and representation of the mosaic held her spellbound. Only her rigid schedule for the day kept her from remaining." READ MORE
