BUT FIRST I HAVE TO EAT! "Marianne! Can you help me figure out where I should go with this painting?"
"Marianne! Can you show me your 5-color recipe for making black?"
"Marianne! Can I watch you paint this afternoon?"
"Yes! But first I have to eat!"
Workshop and Artist Mastery program participants used to hearing this response have added to their requests, " but maybe you should eat first?" They now understand the important role a substantive snack plays in sustaining the vital energy needed for a good day in the studio.
The act of creating art requires a tremendous amount of emotional, intellectual and physical energy. Our whole being is engaged in generating the flow between thinking feeling and making, unaware of how much we expend in the seemingly seamless integration of heart, head, and hand. During this process our hunger bell is usually on silent ringer so without sufficient fuel to begin with, the magic kindled while in "the zone" can be overtaken by determined frustration which leads to this merry-go-round mindset:
"I'm gonna keep going until it WORKS!"
A sure-fire magic-squasher.
As we open the season of "eating" with Thanksgiving, consider spending your "food fuel" making art. Years ago while studying painting in China someone told me that more calories are burned while painting than most other activities . . .
NEWS TO FEED THE SOUL! The art world is celebrating women artists.
2019 has been full of exhibitions spotlighting women at big name institutions, and the Baltimore Museum of Art just announced that their sole focus in 2020 will be on showing and collecting art created by women.
It's refreshing that blue chip museums and galleries are showcasing art that's rooted in mystery instead of the mind as illustrated in these stories . . .
I believe bringing The Feminine voice to the foreground in art is helping to shift humanity into greater equilibrium. It is the unity of masculine and feminine energy that spawns acceptance, cooperation and ultimately love. This is the foundation of our survival and making art is one means to this end.
