Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
BuzzFeed

BuzzFeed News has pulled its political reporter from the White House press pool after a coronavirus outbreak among the group’s members.

The company pulled the reporter, Kadia Goba, from the pool on Wednesday, forcing the group to seek a substitute to fill her shift, which includes covering the president.

“Anyone that knows me understands I’d rather be at the White House working today,” Ms. Goba told the The New York Times, “but at the same time, there are obvious concerns about working indoors during an outbreak.”

“We are in uncharted territory,” Dallas Morning News bureau chief Todd Gillman wrote in an email to members obtained by the Times. “No one wants anyone to take unwarranted risk. Nor do we want the pool system to collapse.”

In addition to three reporters, at least four White House communications staffers have tested positive for Covid-19 over the last several days, including press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

The White House Correspondents’ Association said in a statement Wednesday that members planned to continue working, but that it “strongly” encouraged them “to avoid working from the White House grounds entirely if it can be avoided.”

It's a smart move and statement.

MEDIA LOSER:
Maria Bartiromo

You might have expected Susan Page, the widely (somewhat unfairly) criticized moderator of last night’s debate, to take today's loser slot.

But Maria Bartiromo — thanks to her bizarre, sycophantic, conspiracy-fueled interview with President Donald Trump Thursday morning — beat her by a mile.

Granted, the interview made some news: Trump said he would not participate in a virtual debate.

But that’s where the use of the interview ended. Trump ranted about being in perfect health. He falsely called the unauthorized drugs he received a “cure,” mocked the use of masks, and said “you don’t really need drugs” to fight Covid-19.

Bartiromo moved on without a word of pushback. When Trump trashed her colleague Chris Wallace, no pushback. She was eager to move on to the deep state part of the interview, in which she all but demanded he persecute his political enemies and used Russian intel to accuse Democrats of crimes.

After the host and Trump delighted in baseless allegations of widespread voting fraud in the upcoming election, Bartiromo exclaimed “If they cheated in 2016, they’re going to cheat again!”

Trump went on to rant about a slew of political enemies, calling on Obama and Biden to be jailed.

Bartiromo loved it.

The A-Block

MILITIA PLOT THWARTED

The FBI has busted a militia plot to kidnap and murder Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and violently overthrow the state government. At least six men are involved and were arrested on Wednesday.

The STUNNING details are just coming out in this developing and shocking story.

Dangerously Indefensible

Shortly after the news broke that the FBI had uncovered and stopped the plot against Gov. Whitmer, journalists on Twitter quickly recalled a mid-April tweet from President Donald Trump shouting 'LIBERATE MICHIGAN!' — and noted that the two do not seem unrelated.

"It's almost like "LIBERATE MICHIGAN" was a dangerously indefensible message for the President of the United States to send..." said one of many on point tweets.

DEBATE

The 2020 Vice Presidential debate between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris on Wednesday night generated a lot of news, of course, which you can find covered in our special 2020 Debates section of the Mediaite website.

Frank Luntz's focus group scored the debate for Vice President Pence.

A poll of CNN viewers resoundingly disagreed.

Fox's Geraldo Rivera thought it was a tie. The rest of the Hannity panel wildly disagreed.

George Stephanopoulos said Pence was "mansplaining" by arguing with Sen. Harris. So did CNN's S.E. Cupp.

ABC's Martha Raddatzdid not agree.

Speaking of debates

Biden on Thursday called for the Commission on Presidential Debates to reschedule a planned town hall debate event to facilitate Trump making an in-person appearance.

The commission announced earlier today the idea of a virtual, remote debate, which Trump dismissed in his wild Bartiromo interview (see above.)

Values

Former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg stunned Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum when he went all the way there by asking why Vice President Pence would share a presidential ticket with “a president caught with a porn star?”

Regeneron

While Trump was wrong to call his Regeneron treatment a cure, Dr. Anthony Fauci hastens to add that this does not mean it shouldn't be seen as effective or dismissed out of hand. the way Sen. Kamala Harris dismisses hypothetical future vaccines.

Stopping Political Ads

Facebook announced Wednesday that it plans to stop running political ads for a while starting from as soon as the polls close on November 3rd.

Biden Sets Ratings Record

NBC News’ forum with Democratic presidential challenger Joe Biden on Monday night scored the best town hall combined ratings of the 2020 election cycle across all three networks, NBC, MSNBC and CNBC.

According to Nielsen Media Research, 6.7 million Americans watched the hour-long event, held in Miami, Florida. That bested the audience for ABC News’ town hall with President Donald Trump from...

Dropped

Country star Morgan Wallen was abruptly dropped as the musical guest of the next Saturday Night Live after recent videos surfaced of him partying in a crowded Alabama bar without wearing a mask.

Also Dropped

Trump campaign adviser Harlan Hill will no longer be allowed on Fox News after tweeting during the vice presidential debate Wednesday night that Sen. Harris is an “insufferable lying bitch.”

Fox News told Mediaite on Thursday afternoon that they will no longer be booking Hill on the network.

“We have no intention of booking him as a guest on any of our platforms,” the network said in a statement.

THE FLY

Vice President Mike Pence had an unexpected visitor during Wednesday night’s vice-presidential debate when a fly landed on his head.

It stayed there for an absurdly long time.

Like a really long time.

And a star was born.

And then Steve Schmidt happened.
