Boundary Waters algae blooms spark questions, concern
Blue-green algae is typically found in lakes with heavy nutrient run-off from nearby farms, lawns and roads. But researchers are now trying to figure out what’s causing the sometimes harmful blooms in more remote lakes in northern Minnesota, including in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

What else we're watching:
Ski de She:  Thousands of skiers from around the world flock to northwestern Wisconsin every February to ski the American Birkebeiner, the largest cross-country ski race in the country. But the vast majority of those competitors are men. Last year, for the longest marathon races, there were more than three times more male skiers than women. Enter the Ski de She.

Low flow: Plummeting water levels in the lower Mississippi River are projected to drop even further in the weeks ahead, a projection shows, dampening the region's economic activity and potentially threatening jobs in one of the country's poorest states.

Bigger than loans: Student debt cancellation is a prominent issue among young voters, but it's not the sole driving issue organizers are pushing before Election Day.

Praise from the Queen: The Mindekirken congregation was founded in 1922, at the end of a decades-long migration of hundreds of thousands of Norwegians to Minnesota. The Queen of Norway joined worshiper there this weekend.
