Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
NY1's Pat Kiernan

NY1 anchor Pat Kiernan called out the New York Times for snubbing the network in their initial coverage of New York's gubernatorial debate between Kathy Hochul (D) and Lee Zeldin (R).

Kiernan lambasted The Gray Lady on Wednesday as he flagged that an article regarding the Hochul-Zeldin showdown failed to acknowledge that the debate was organized by Spectrum News NY1. He also called out the paper for snubbing moderators Susan Arbetter of Spectrum News and Errol Louis of NY1.

“I’m not happy, I don’t think they’re playing fair here, and this has happened repeatedly,” Kiernan said as he continued to accuse the Times of not giving his colleagues enough credit.

"We put dozens of hours into organizing these debates and staffing these debates," he continued. "I don’t think its too much to ask in a 1,600 word story that they mention Susan by name, or they mention Errol by name, or put in one little sentence that says NY1 organized the debate.”

Kiernan deserves props for keeping the Times honest and calling out its failure to credit (a frequent problem for the paper). It's as important as ever to make sure the work of local news is highlighted. The Times knows better than other national outlets that local news is a crucial yet struggling form of media dedicated to informing the populace.

Kiernan posted a clip of his rant to Twitter, earning the acknowledgment of Times’ Deputy Metro Politics editor Dean Chang. Chang said new references to NY1 were added to the piece, and the original omission was “an oversight in the heat of making a print deadline.”

"Appreciate the response [Chang]. (Next NY1 debate is the Senate matchup on Sunday.)," Kiernan replied after successfully getting the Times to give his network and its anchors the recognition they deserve.

MEDIA LOSER:
The View's Joy Behar

Joy Behar suggested Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Republican nominee for senate in Pennsylvania, violated the Hippocratic oath by running harsh campaign ads against Democrat John Fetterman.

Behar made the comment on Wednesday's The View, as the hosts discussed Tuesday night's Pennsylvania senate race debate.

Fetterman, who suffered a stroke just before winning the Democratic primary, struggled at times to express himself and many observers and pundits saw the debate as a disaster for his campaign.

After Sarah Haines weighed in on a clip of Oz discussing abortion rights,Behar jumped in and steered the co-hosts away from Tuesday night's buzzworthy debate.

Noting that Oz is a doctor, Behar went on to slam the Republican candidate for potentially violating the Hippocratic oath.

“The Republican Party is running a bunch of ads about showing Fetterman stumbling on things because of the stroke. What kind of a doctor is behind that, aren’t they supposed to do no harm?” she said.

“It’s so unsympathetic to the guy, you know?”

Behar went on to label Oz as a "very slick" "TV guy," adding, "He’s like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. At this point, I don’t know which one is the real Dr. Oz, but voting for the slick person on TV is like voting for me."

Regardless of one's thoughts on Oz, it is ridiculous to accuse the candidate of violating a code of ethics simply because he ran harsh ads against his political opponent.

It's pretty clear that the ads do not pose a physical risk to Fetterman, despite the fact that they call attention to his medical history.

A candidate's recent stroke is also an entirely appropriate subject to scrutinize weeks before an election.
