Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Christiane Amanpour

CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour revealed that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi canceled an interview when she refused to wear a headscarf.

Amanpour joined New Day on Thursday to talk about the protests raging across Iran after Mahsa Amini died in police custody last week.

Amini was arrested by Tehran’s morality police on charges of violating Iranian law requiring women to cover their hair with a hijab. While officials say she died of a heart attack, the public has largely rejected the government’s claim, and mass protests have broken out as result.

Amanpour was slated to have an interview with Raisi while he was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

While explaining all the preparations that went into the interview, Amanpour told New Day that after waiting 40 minutes for Raisi to arrive, one of his aides asked her to put on a headscarf for the Islamic holy months of Muharram and Safar.

Amanpour said she “politely declined” the request, noting she had never been asked by any Iranian president to wear a headscarf outside of Iran.

Raisi’s aide informed her the interview wouldn’t happen without the headscarf, so Amanpour stood her ground and "walked away."

“I think that he did not want to be seen with a female without a head scarf in this moment,” she concluded on New Day.

“I politely declined. We are in New York, where there is no law or tradition regarding headscarves. I pointed out that no previous Iranian president has required this when I have interviewed them outside Iran," Amanpour explained on Twitter.

Bravo.

MEDIA LOSER:
Lara Trump

Fox News contributor Lara Trump appears on a daily basis on the network to opine on the various scandals surrounding her father-in-law.

As if that blatant conflict isn't bad enough, on Thursday she mounted some absurd defenses of Letitia James’s civil lawsuit against the Trump family and their real estate business.

Trump is the wife of Eric Trump, son of former President Donald Trump and current executive vice president of development and acquisition for the Trump Organization.

James, the New York attorney general, announced a sweeping lawsuit this week accusing Trump, his adult children and their organization of years of fraud.

Lara opened an appearance on Fox & Friends Thursday by reminding viewers of James’s past pledges to take down her father-in-law, which is an entirely reasonable argument to suggest that the civil lawsuit is politically motivated. It is not an exoneration, however, and if Trump is found to have outrageously been fraudulent in his self-evaluations of net worth for business purposes, then James’s motivations are largely immaterial.

One of Lara's arguments on Fox News, however, was completely absurd: she made the case that the investigation is killing children.

Lara told viewers that Eric started a charity to raise funds for Saint Jude Children’s Hospital, and that James is investigating the charity as part of her probe.

“And unfortunately, guess who was hurt by that? It wasn’t my husband. It’s the kids of Saint Jude,” she said. “Who knows how many kids have died unnecessarily thanks to her investigation and just vitriol and hatred for anyone with the last name Trump?”

Not the strongest case.
