Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
CNN’s Shimon Prokupecz

CNN’s Shimon Prokupecz has been perhaps the most indefatigable national reporter covering the aftermath of the Uvalde school shooting in Texas.

Last night, the renowned CNN correspondent landed yet another scoop.

One of the Texas state troopers who is a target of the investigation into the many egregious failures during the Uvalde school shooting was recently hired by the very school district she’s accused of failing to protect, CNN reported Wednesday.

Outrage grew in the wake of the May 24, 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 children and two teachers dead. News reporting and surveillance footage showed as many as 400 police officers were at the school but failed to intervene for a shocking 77-minute period, leaving dead, dying, and grievously injured children in the room with the shooter.

According to the new CNN report, a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) named Crimson Elizondo arrived at the Robb campus “within two minutes” of when the gunman began shooting.

Elizondo “no longer works for DPS,” wrote Prokupecz, because “[d]uring the summer she left and got a new job” with the Uvalde CISD, “where her role is to protect some of the very same children who survived the Robb Elementary shooting.”

Adding to the outrage, Prokupecz reported on body cam footage that showed Elizondo claiming she would have gone into the school had her own kid been inside.

On Thursday, the day after that report was published, Elizondo was fired by the Uvalde CISD.

MEDIA LOSER:
The Blaze's Elijah Schaffer

Elijah Schaffer became a star in right-wing media thanks to his coverage of riots in the wake of the killing of George Floyd in 2020.

He amassed 470,000 Twitter followers and was named a host at Glenn Beck's Blaze TV.

That all came crashing down last month when he was fired from the Blaze, which said he was “terminated for violating company policies and standards” after an “investigation regarding a personal matter.”

Schaffer confirmed his departure from the network on Twitter, though no details were given.

"Guys it’s true, it’s been a long time coming, I am no longer an employee with The Blaze," he said. "I am unable to go into details, but I assure you my commitment to the cause is unwavering & I will not stop fighting for you."

The Beast's Will Sommer reported Thursday that Schaffer was fired after another host at the network, Sara Gonzalez, accused him of sexual assault.

Per The Beast, in late August Schaffer was accused of groping Gonzales's breasts without her consent at a film premiere.

After a weeks-long investigation, he was out. Neither Beck, Schaffer or Gonzales has addressed the report on Twitter or in a statement to the Beast.

Schaffer had a controversial presence at The Blaze. He entered the Capitol, and Nancy Pelosi's office, with pro-Trump rioters who stormed the building on Jan. 6. In a post that has since been deleted, he called the rioters "revolutionaries."

In July, he went on a misogynistic rant declaring “it’s a sign of a curse on a country" when women are allowed into positions of power.
