Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Matt Drudge

Matt Drudge has made waves in recent days because of his blistering coverage of Twitter owner Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump.

While covering Musk’s stunning suspensions of journalists last week, Drudge ran the headline, “OFF WITH THEIR TWEETS!” He followed that up with “MANIC MUSK PURGES REPORTERS” and “IS HE TRIPPING ON DRUGS?”

On Tuesday, Drudge raised the ire of Fox News host Mark Levin over a banner related to House Democrats finally obtaining Trump’s tax returns.

The link prompted Levin to whine on Twitter: “Matt Drudge, propagandist for the police state.”

Drudge has long incensed both sides of the political aisle for how he covers the news. Sometimes liberals are on the receiving end, sometimes its conservatives. Those who complain are reliably partisans.

Props to Drudge for calling it like he sees and stepping outside the bounds of partisan loyalty – whatever Levin might say. The surprising tone and political slant of the Drudge Report is arguably what has kept the site interesting to so many readers over the decades.

MEDIA LOSER:
Fred Ryan

It's been a rough week for the leadership of the Washington Post, particularly Fred Ryan, the paper's publisher.

Last week, Ryan held a contentious town hall meeting with Post staff informing them that further layoffs will be hitting the paper, which has struggled with a loss of subscribers and is expected to lose money in 2022 for the first time in years.

During that meeting, Ryan stepped off stage as employees tried to ask further questions about the layoffs, an embarrassing scene that went viral online.

Now, the Daily Beast reports Ryan's announcement of layoffs and handling of the fallout has "enraged—and unified—a newsroom unlike any episode in recent memory."

The Beast's Corbin Bolies also reports it has led to fractures between Ryan and the editor he selected to lead the paper, Sally Buzbee, who was allegedly left out of the loop on the layoffs.

It's a tough time for the media industry. While Ryan and his newsroom are facing severe headwinds, we hope the Post, a wonderful paper, can turn the tide soon.
