Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Neil Cavuto

Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto stood out in the swath of revelations at his network resulting from a newly unsealed filing in Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6 billion defamation suit ... and he came out looking uniquely good.

The brief claims that Fox News executives criticized Cavuto for cutting off then Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany for making baseless accusations that Democrats committed voter fraud days after the 2020 election. McEnany is now a host on Fox News.

“Well, well, well. I just think we have to be very clear. And she’s charging the other side is welcoming fraud and welcoming illegal voting," Cavuto said on November 9th, cutting into McEnany’s presser.

"Unless she has more details to back that up. I can’t, in good countenance continue showing you this."

Cavuto vowed to air any proof of fraud or "rigging and cheating" from Democrats if found.

The remarkable on-air moment led to fierce backlash from inside the network, according to the newly unsealed filing.

“The brand team led by Raj Shah at Fox Corporation notified senior Fox News and Fox Corporation leadership of the 'Brand Threat' posed by Cavuto’s action,” the document further stated.

The filing also notes that top executives, concerned about losing viewers to far-right, election-denying networks Newsmax and OAN, cited Cavuto as ammunition being used against Fox News.

The filing exposes several Fox News personalities and executives for their unabashed hypocrisy and disregard for democracy. So, kudos to Cavuto for valuing the truth above his traffic and above appeasing Donald Trump.

MEDIA LOSER:
Tucker Carlson

A trove of new unsealed evidence in Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation suit against Fox News reveals a massive gap between what hosts, including Tucker Carlson, said on air and what they privately believed.

According to private texts, emails, and evidence revealed in a newly unsealed filing in the $1.6 billion defamation suit, Fox News allowed conspiracy theories about the election to air despite knowing, in the words of Fox Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch, that those theories were “crazy.”

A key aspect of Dominion's suit is that the hosts also knew that election fraud claims were lies, yet pushed them anyway.

Private texts between Carlson and fellow top hosts Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham seem to prove exactly that.

Sidney Powell is lying by the way. I caught her. It’s insane,” Carlson wrote to Ingraham on November 18. Carlson has continued to spin 2020 election conspiracy theories as recently as Thursday night.

He also tried to get Fox News White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich fired for fact-checking a Trump tweet and complained to his (now former) producer Alex Pfeiffer about failing to cover election fraud on his show. Carlson additionally conveyed his fear that Donald Trump could “destroy” his hit show if they “play it wrong."

On January 6, as the mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Carlson texted Pfeiffer that Trump is “a demonic force, a destroyer. But he’s not going to destroy us.”

Carlson seemed to be the star of the damning rief. While he allowed absurd claims about the election to air to millions of viewers unfettered, in private he described them as insane and even tried to punish his colleagues for reporting the truth.
