Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
CNN's Jamie Gangel

CNN special correspondent Jamie Gangel called out President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump for breaking with longstanding norms surrounding modern presidents and their handling of classified documents.

Gangel spoke during a Thursday CNN panel on the appointment of special counsel Robert K. Hur to investigate Biden’s retention of classified documents.

She offered historical context throughout her report, singling out both Trump and Biden's atypical retention of classified documents.

Bolstering her point, Gangel explained that sources familiar with the National Archives confirmed this has not occurred regularly throughout history, adding, "if you go back, Bush 41, this did not happen. Bush 43, no. Clinton, no. Obama, no. Dick Cheney, no."

Andy McCabe, the former deputy director of the FBI, was also sitting on the panel and confirmed Gangel’s analysis.

Before Thursday's discussion, Gangel had already delivered exclusive reporting on the contents of the Biden camp's classified documents.

Kudos to Gangel for consistently delivering non-partisan reporting on the topic, which has largely divided the media into pro-Trump or pro-Biden camps. (Shocker!)

MEDIA LOSER:
MSNBC's Joy Reid

Joy Reid conducted a rather unimpressive interview withRep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) on Tuesday night.

As Mediaite's Isaac Schorr noted in a new op-ed, "The interview covered several topics seemingly selected for the sole purpose of Reid catching Donalds not knowing what he was talking about."

During a discussion on entitlements, Reid refused to accept Donalds' claim that “Social Security is going to be insolvent in 2035," yet provided no evidence to back her counter.

When the congressman attempted to reply, Reid insisted, “No, no, they’re not, they’re not, that’s not true, that’s not true, that’s not true."

Donalds eventually completed his thought, yet Reid still cut him off to declare, “we’re not going to have a whole long thing on Social Security.”

Instead of discussing policy with a congressman, Reid opted to suggest that Donalds' Republican colleagues nominated him for speaker as a mere “diversity statement.”

Before painting Donalds' candidacy as an exercise in performative affirmative action, Reid repeatedly cut him off as he tried to defend his qualifications.

It wasn't all bad for Reid this week, however — her show notched the best ratings on MSNBC Tuesday.
