Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
CNN's Poppy Harlow

CNN’s Poppy Harlow persistentlypushed Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas on the situation at the border on Friday

In a new interview joined by CNN correspondent Rosa Flores, Harlow asked Mayorkas if he would “qualify” the situation at the border as a “crisis.”

He refused to do so and instead called on Congress to act on immigration reform.

Harlow pushed further, noting approximately 2.4 million migrants crossed last year. Mayorkas opted to refer to the situation at the border as a “migrant challenge” instead of a “crisis.”

“I understand that, but just what you’re seeing the 20 times you’ve been there, the record number of migrants at the southern border and last year it was nearly 2.4 million,” Harlow said. “If that’s not a crisis, secretary, what is?”

While Harlow eventually moved on, she later pressed Mayorkas further on the administration’s handling of the border.

She noted border officials have told Flores they feel “abandoned” by the current administration and asked why it took President Joe Biden two years to agree to a border visit despite numerous past calls to do so.

Kudos for the impressive interview on a tough topic.

MEDIA LOSER:
CPAC Chair Matt Schlapp

American Conservative Union leader Matt Schlapp was accused of groping the crotch of a male former staffer who worked on Herschel Walker’s Senate campaign.

The Daily Beast's Roger Sollenberger reported he spoke to a former Walker campaign staffer who alleged Schlapp bought him drinks at two Atlanta-area bars on Oct. 19.

The outlet said it would keep the man’s identity private, as he fears a reprisal that could affect his career.

The staffer described Schlapp, as inappropriately and repeatedly intruding into his personal space at the bars.

He said Schlapp “groped” and “fondled” his crotch in a car during a “sustained and unwanted and unsolicited” encounter.

The man claimed he filmed videos of himself speaking about what happened immediately after the alleged encounter to document it. Sollenberger said he watched the videos, as did two people close to the staffer.

In one video viewed by the Beast, the man accused Schlapp of grabbing his "junk," adding that the CPAC chair "pummeled it at length."

Schlapp denied the accusation through an attorney. He has been married to conservative political commentator Mercedes Schlapp for two decades.
